Aleyah Solomon graduated from NSCAD University and is a professional photographer from Halifax, Nova Scotia. With a knack for storytelling, each image represents not just the visual content you see, but rather puts emphasis on specific moments from each place she visits. Prior to shooting, she familiarizes herself with her surroundings, noting the light and shadows, the shapes of items, the direction of the wind, etc… and goes from there. “To create an image isn’t just to take a photo but to experience a moment and capture everything that speaks to you, sometimes for reasons unknown.” Crediting artists like Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Parr, Cindy Sherman and Irving Penn, among others, as inspiration for her work, she often turns to history books when feeling stuck or in need of motivation for a new project.
Currently based between Halifax (Canada) and Paris (France), she co-founded Here & There Magazine where her roles include creative director, curator and lead photographer. She also freelances for other magazines and clients such as NUVO Magazine, Suitcase Magazine and has worked with various designers such as Token Paris, Sid Neigum, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Sentaler, to name a few. Aleyah has attended many fashion weeks in Toronto, New York, Paris and London, shooting runway and backstage, and travels extensively, working and creating her series in various cities around the world.
